North Korea Reveals First Nuclear-Capable Warship Choe Hyon

Please share, it's important for me

North Korea has revealed the Choe Hyon, its first nuclear-capable surface warship.

Leader Kim Jong Un personally inspected the vessel during recent weapons tests and naval reviews. The move marks a major shift in Pyongyang’s military planning. Until now, North Korea focused mainly on land-based missiles and submarines.

Choe Hyon Expands North Korea’s Naval Nuclear Capabilities

The Choe Hyon is a 5,000-ton destroyer equipped with advanced missile systems and vertical launch capabilities. Analysts believe the ship can carry nuclear-capable cruise missiles and short-range ballistic missiles. North Korean state media also claims the vessel supports anti-aircraft and anti-submarine operations.

The destroyer launched officially at the Nampo shipyard in April 2025. Kim Jong Un attended the ceremony and later supervised weapons tests from the ship. Reports indicate the vessel fired cruise missiles and air-defense systems during trials.

Military observers note that the ship introduces technologies rarely seen in North Korea’s navy. The destroyer includes phased-array radar and a vertical launch system. These features resemble systems used on modern destroyers from larger naval powers.

Why the Choe Hyon Matters for Regional Security

North Korea can now threaten targets from the sea while maintaining pressure through land-based missile systems. That flexibility makes military tracking and interception more difficult for regional forces.

Satellite imagery and defense assessments show North Korea plans to build additional destroyers in the same class. Kim Jong Un has reportedly ordered continued naval expansion under the country’s current military modernization program.
